A White Hat’s Guide on How to Avoid the U.S. Ban on TikTok

TikTok’s clock has been ticking for a few months now, but finally it seems the end (in the US at least) is nigh. With a government order in place to remove the hugely popular social media app from September 20, the US will effectively join India in issuing a blanket TikTok ban – the app will be removed from the App Store and Play Store.

What remains unclear is whether that means an estimated 80 million TikTok users in the US that will no longer be able to access and share lip-syncing videos, viral dance routines and comedic stunts on their smartphones. What is further alarming to Intelprise is that many of our millenial and generation Z clients use the TikTok platform to promote their content and run their business during dire times of COVID-19. Hence, we decided to write this article as a source of higher cyber intelligence over this ban so that visitors may do with the information what they want understanding that in not any way shape or form Intelprise is encouraging the circumvention of U.S. laws. Please note that usage and distribution of this report is done at your will and responsibility.

Here is what you’re up against : US Department of Commerce (DoC) Ban Declaration

Any provision of internet hosting services enabling the functioning or optimization of the mobile application in the U.S.;

Any provision of content delivery network services enabling the functioning or optimization of the mobile application in the U.S.;

Any provision directly contracted or arranged internet transit or peering services enabling the function or optimization of the mobile application within the U.S.;

Any utilization of the mobile application’s constituent code, functions, or services in the functioning of software or services developed and/or accessible within the U.S

How does TikTok really work? Here’s the Low Down…

For an app like TikTok that allows posting and viewing videos, the app on a user’s phone needs to communicate with the app company’s cloud/servers on the internet… Hence, if access to the server or cloud is blocked by the internet service provider or the app company themselves, then, even if a user has the app, they will not be able to access its services. On the other hand, apps that perform functions like selfie-editing or saving space on your phone can perform as normal since these functions occur locally on your phone and don’t need communication with a server on the internet. Where does that leave Intelprise’s clients? Nowhere….. or better yet, as we’d like to call inhouse …”swimming up shit’s creek without a paddle”

Steps you can take to TikTok Freedom Land:

  • Buy a cheap Android device of any kind with updated firmware on it.
  • Download the non U.S. APK version of TikTok in reputable Android Package repository sites. Reason the choice in non U.S. version of the app’s APK file is because it is the one that is intrinsically coded to talk back to non U.S. TikTok cloud services. We will soon put a link of that download here.
  • Download a FREE VPN Android service app like ExpressVPN
  • Establish your internet connection from the ExpressVPN app or with any other VON service of your choice with a country that is neither U.S. or India.
  • Open, install and use the non APK TikTok file and enjoy!
